After 5 days of art classes with Roger Cruz, I've noticed a lot of changes in my work. That, I suppose, is somewhat obvious. Suddenly, it REALLY MATTERS where the biceps and triceps go, how the shoulders are shaped and placed on the body, etc. I'd had anatomy classes before, of course, but for some reason, it was Roger who made it seem REALLY IMPORTANT OH GOD. I feel as if I'm going to hurt his feelings if I don't pay more attention to it now. It's kinda funny, but true.
But something else happened, too. Something snapped, like... uuh... lik asnapping thing. In my head. Argh. Hooray for Nina's English at 3:35AM!
Anyway.
Aside from Batman and Hellboy, super hero stuff had been really blah to me for a while now. I used to read X-Men compulsively when I was 13 or so (and I wanted to marry Wolverine for some reason -- Cyclops was RIGHT THERE, but no, it was Wolverine I wanted, because Christ, I'm fucked up) and I also read some Superman, but as I grew older, Batman became the only one I cared for (and wanted to marry) until I discovered Hellboy (never wanted to marry him though).
Now, Roger draws X-Men: First Class, and a few covers for other series sometimes, and he would bring along whatever he'd been working on for us to see. On the last day he brought a really cool Doctor Strange cover that he was finishing up. It was just awesome to hear him talk about how he works. I had always imagined that a certain amount of skill was required to draw super hero comics, but I had never thought of just how much work it is to actually do it. My fucking Christ, there is a LOT of careful planning and sleepless nights that go into it -- it all looked the same to me, so I always thought there was some easy formula or something to make them, but there's not -- and if there is, no one told poor Roger!
As a result of the classes, I am now paying a lot more attention to super heroes than I used to. My collection, which used to consist of nothing but Batman and Hellboy, is now starting to grow with some X-Men and a couple Superman comics. I think I like Batman and Hellboy because they're both somewhat dark, but then, why am I not reading Spawn? Blargh, I don't know why I like some and don't like others. But anyway I am just so amazed at how much time I spent looking away from these. There is some really good stuff in these comics, good writing and good art and good shit all around. Of course, in the end, it's still super heroes so there's still a lot of cheesy stuff too. But it's really not so bad once you get past that and just enjoy it for what it is.
I may want to draw this stuff someday. I mean, in like 50 years when I'm good enough. They pay good money.
I really should sleep.
Just for reference, these days I want to marry Cassidy. Fuck, he can bite me anywhere he wants. Rawr.
